Atlanta-based Helton and Bragg are a free-spirited, improvisatory duo who thrill at combining disparate ideas and creating compelling, real-time compositions. In Blake Helton's facile drumming one can detect both Rasheid Ali's free-flowing colorations and the motorik R&B of Can's Jaki Liebezeit. Although Colin Bragg enjoys the odd Hendrix-esque guitar tear, his penchant for dreamy melodies and trance-inducing blues fits perfectly within the duo's stream-of-consciousness sets. Their mutual enthusiasm for classic electronic music yields further dimensions - one can imagine finding Helton and Bragg filed under 'Future Jazz Impressionism' in some imminent, dystopian bargain bin.
Their latest release Still Life with Knife imagines the moody, synth-drenched soundtrack for an unrealized Italian giallo film, composed by an anonymous collective simply known as Knife.
